Dad and I stopped in for fried shrimp on our way out of town. The woman at the desk at our hotel had advised us against getting seafood anywhere in Montgomery, but she said she was from Mobile and used to really good, fresh seafood. So we figured there had to be something good enough for us coastless people nearby and stumbled into Jan’s.
We both got the platter with fried shrimp, oysters, and grouper. I had broccoli and fried green tomatoes as my sides (both fine, though it was also my first time with fried green tomatoes and I just might not be a fan), and both came with delicious hushpuppies. The fried fish was DIVINE, so we had to ask what fish it was before leaving (grouper). Shrimp was also pretty good, as were the oysters. Beat any fried seafood I can remember. Remoulade was excellent as well, not sure if they make it in house or not though.
Atmosphere was cute and reminded us of restaurants in Sanibel. Service was friendly and quick, which was helpful since we told her we were in a bit of a time crunch. Otherwise we probably would have tried a dessert!
TL;DR- may not live up to your seafood expectations if you grew up on the gulf, but it was pretty great for some midwesterners craving something fried and fishy in a comfortable, welcoming environment.
